The Hidden Romance of Busan’s Riverside: A Journey to Nakdonggang Orial

Main
Busan is a city famously defined by its relationship with the sea, but for those who seek the city's quieter soul, the journey leads to the banks of the Nakdong River. While many local duck restaurants favor spicy gochujang-based sauces, Nakdonggang Orial earned its reputation through a unique tradition: fresh, charcoal-grilled duck followed by a robust, "maeuntang-style" spicy stew brewed from the remaining savory cuts.
A Step: Perspective
A Timeless Tonic for the Korean Soul.
To me, this restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it is the very essence of my
childhood memories. I still remember the rhythmic sizzle of the grill under my mother’s
careful hands, the boisterous energy of a packed dining hall, and the sight of ducks
gathered in groups along the riverbanks. The food was so delicious that my family visited
every week, and a relative even started their own business inspired by these very flavors.
Returning after twenty years—now with a family of my own—I was struck by how the
world had changed, yet the flavors remained remarkably constant. Finding the restaurant
was easy, even though my parents had transitioned to a rival spot across the street and I
had nearly forgotten the name. The aroma of the grilled duck was as inviting as ever, and
the deep, refreshing broth of the duck stew felt warm and grounding.
Notably, this meal bridged a cultural gap for my wife, who is a foreigner. While many Korean dishes can be overwhelmingly spicy for those unaccustomed to them, she was able to truly enjoy the meal here, marveling at the taste without the usual struggle with heat. If the sashimi of Jagalchi and Haeundae represents the romance of Busan’s sea, then the meal here—shared against the backdrop of a setting sun—represents the true romance of the Busan riverside.
